100 Smart Cities Get Cabinet’s Approval

The union cabinet approved centre governments two flagship schemes – 100 smart cities project and the new urban renewal mission named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with a total expenditure of 98000 crore. This means atleast one such smart city in every state.

Under the smart cities mission, each selected city would get central assistance of 100 crore per year for five years. Cities to be developed will be selected through a competition which will check their ability to achieve the mission.

Smart City mission is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project with the intention of recasting the urban landscape of the country by making cities more livable, inclusive and also driving the economic growth.

The focus of smart cities will be on essential infrastructure services such as continuous and clean water supply, power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, hassle free and efficient public transportation, affordable housing, wi-fi enabled zones and robust IT connectivity.
